Frequently Asked Questions
What is Early Intervention?
The Early Intervention Program is a federally mandated program under the Individuals with Disabilities Act that provides therapy services for Infants and Toddlers ages 0-3 years with a qualifying diagnosis or developmental delay. Services are FREE and are provided in the child’s natural environment – home, daycare, and in the community.
How do I know if my child qualifies for Early Intervention?
If you have concerns regarding your child’s development please call the CONNECT Helpline at 1-800-692-7288 or if you reside in Erie County, you may also contact Expert Community Care Management to schedule at (814) 528-0600. Eligibility is determined through evaluation. Early Intervention (EI) services may address 5 different areas of development:
- Cognitive – early problem-solving skills, attention, memory, play skills.
- Social/Emotional – interacting with others, regulation of emotions.
- Physical – gross motor skills (such as rolling, sitting, crawling, walking) and fine motor (use of hands and eyes, development of grasp.
- Communication – understanding and use of sounds, gestures, and words to communicate.
- Adaptive – self-help skills including feeding, dressing, toileting.
Does my child need to be referred by their physician?
No. While many children are referred by their physician, it is not required. Parents may also refer their child by calling one of the numbers listed above.
I live outside of Erie County. Can my child still receive help?
Yes. If you live in Pennsylvania, call the CONNECT Helpline at 1-800-692-7288 . You will be connected to Service Coordination in your specific county. Also, Early Intervention is a federally mandated program, so every state in the U.S. has an EI program.
How Long Does Therapy Last?
This is individualized. Once a child qualifies for EI, a plan is developed called an IFSP(Individualized Family Service Plan). The initial plan is for 1 year from the date of qualification. However, not all children who qualify will need an entire year of service. Frequency of service may be weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly, depending on your child’s specific needs.
